We kept hearing, “You’ve got to go to Murphys!” and so we did. It was another beautiful sunny California day…we’re finally starting to dry out! A great day to explore some more. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting to find at Murphys CA…something more rustic and Gold Rush-ish, I suppose.
So I got myself a surprise.
These store fronts are totally updated. Or rebuilt completely. Not sure, but its certainly a clean and tidy looking Old Town with plenty of vineyards represented. Boy, California sure has a kazillion vineyards.
If you enjoy fine shopping while you’re out in Gold Country you might want to spend a day shopping the stores in Murphys CA. Where even the new stuff is meant to look old. But chic, of course.
Of course, full-time travellers need to be very wary of purchasing things that make our living space crammed. That’s why we tend to purchase edibles. With our big family its pretty easy for us to keep food under control so it doesn’t crowd us out of our skoolie!
We spent time taste testing balsamic vinegars (and the occasional olive oil) and came out with a Key Lime White Balsamic (Everette had to visit the local bakery for some dipping bread) and an Espresso Dark Balsamic that we suspect will be tantalizing on vanilla ice cream.
We spent a couple of hours here in Murphys CA, mostly in the Marisolio (taste testing) and the art gallery next door talking with one of the painting artists, Marilyn (can’t recall her last name) who is also a world traveler. Don’t come to Murphys if you’re looking for an authentic gold rush town to brush up on your history lessons. This doesn’t seem to be the town. But if you value a lovely afternoon out wine tasting or want to buy pretty gifts to send back home, Murphys might fit the bill.
HINT: Next town we went to was totally an authentic Gold Rush town. Come check it out!!
