An octopus bite is not what I would have imagined my year ending with, but that’s the exciting thing about every new year unfolding. What will this year hold? Where will we be in a year from now? When we look back, what memories will we hold dear from this current year? Adventures await for us; what will they be? So many unknowns lay ahead. Considering what the essentials in life are as they pertain to us (rather than what other people think they should be for us!) is crucial for us having a successful year
The kids were beach combing and called me over to see their latest find; the smallest of 3 octopi Anders had discovered in less than 24 hours. Instead of playing it safe just watching the little creature crawl amongst the pebbles, I let the octopus grab my finger to see what its suckers felt like. But then it climbed onto my bare palm. I can now talk from experience what its like to hold an octopus; to feel its suckers, but also its beak*. I’m glad to have that experience, even though it did hurt, because having new stories and experiences is now one of the essentials in life, for me. It’s common for me to be the Spectator of Life rather than an active participant. I’m working to change that!
The Essentials in Life
The Essentials are the big things that you want your life to be filled with, so you can consciously say No, or Not Now to the things that aren’t necessary to you accomplishing your goals. I learned about The Essentials in The Power of Less by Leo Babatua which I re-read probably once a year (because I constantly need reminders!)
Knowing what the essentials of life are, and always keeping them in the forefront of our minds helps us manage our time and make better decisions. Its the reason I get out of my cozy bed before the sun even begins to lighten the sky so I have enough time to unhurriedly get dressed, tidy up the bedroom and get the chairs situated outside of the skoolie before Everette has our bulletproof coffees made. Not being too rushed, and getting my environment pleasantly tidy beforehand is important to help manage my stress and improve overall flow of energy in my space. We may or may not be joined by any of the kids, but we start our day as a couple in the beauty of nature
Increasing my knowledge has always been an essential to me, whether by taking courses, talking to interesting and engaging people, visiting museums or reading books. Every day I commit to spending a minimum of 30 minutes to increasing my knowledge base and broadening my mind, but often times this consumes hours of my day. It can include family or couple time as one of us reads aloud and we discuss what we’ve read; often its me doing my own thing.
I absolutely LOVE receiving emails/text messages from readers or people we’ve met face-to-face that tell us the huge influence we’ve had in getting their own family on the road to traveling full-time. To watch how its positively changed their lives and those of their children thrills me to no end. Because I believe strongly in the power of travel to change lives its important for me to:
- share our experiences when meeting people;
- being willing to show the inside of our skoolie to people we just met;
- by writing on the blog;
- and sharing our ebook
Besides keeping the skoolie somewhat clean and tidy so I’m less stressed about showing it at the drop of a hat, everyday its essential for me to write in some form or other so I can share the joys of travel on a broader scale. That sometimes requires me to say NO to something else that’s calling for my attention but which I haven’t deemed essential.
If it isn’t an essential to my life I can let it go.
What about 2018?
Okay, so my question to you at the beginning of 2018 is….what are the essentials in life, according to you?
You might be saying that you want to travel, but is it essential to you? Is that idea always before you? Do you seek out other travellers, connecting with like-minded people who are doing what it is you’re wanting to do? Are you taking at least even mini-steps every day or weekly to accomplish it? What time-wasters are you busy with? What’s taking your time/energy/money away from you actually traveling?
Busy work seems to call for our attention but amazingly if we don’t do it it will often go away. It begs the question “How important was it, really?”
Lesson in point: Emails. When I have convenient internet connection I can easily fill an hour+ a day with reading and replying to emails that I think are important, and clicking on links to watch an interesting video or sign up for a webinar. But when I don’t have easy access to internet my inbox might have 1,000 emails waiting for me. I can quickly go through those same emails deleting as I go and only keep or respond to the most important of them. All the previously “important” stuff that would have consumed my time are now totally unimportant; nonessentials when I value my time and internet connection more.
Be clear on what the essentials in life are for you. Identify the non-essentials and eliminate them. Focus on the big essentials and take steps towards accomplishing them. You might just find you accomplish much more (of what you really want) by doing less!
May 2018 be an amazing year for you full of the things you truly love!
*octopus have a hard beak at their mouth. It hurts! I don’t know anything about octopus bites but it made my palm burn so I poured warm water over it (like you would with sting rays or jellyfish) which illeviated the discomfort a bit, then added the essential oil helichrysum directly (neat) to the site. That brought total relief.
P.P.S. Since we began to travel I’ve now held an alligator, a tarantula and an octopus. I’ve had a cockroach land on my head and in my bed; killed more scorpions than I care to admit; had head lice for first time ever; and eaten rattlesnake. Not everything about traveling is wonderful…but I love my life, nonetheless. Essentials in Life
